Being a summer camp counselor set me up for LIFE, but HOW exactly?Be FlexibleThings rarely go exactly how you plan when dealing with 100+ kids and dozens of daily activities. Being able to entertain through different methods on the fly with limited supplies is an art.Energy MattersIt’s only a bad day if you let it be, and kids pick up on your energy like a bloodhound. If you aren’t excited about what is next, why should they be? Making a glass-half-full perspective your default spills over into every other aspect of your life.Faith (in myself)Without realizing it, you’re leading groups of people and making automatic decisions based on information and instinct. In this process, you build trust with both others and yourself. As we are heading into Week 3 of National Safe Work Month 2023, we would like to share what Spring Safety Consultants are up to in this space... 😊 🚧 🚦 👷🏻♂️This week our Senior Training Specialist (Registered Psychologist) Sonia Ceglinski and our #ECU practicum student Kieran Poynton were on site exploring the specialized and fascinating world of professional divers. 🏊🏻♂️ 🌊 👷🏻♂️ ⚓ 🛳Divers are exposed to unique physical and psychological hazards; therefore, Fitness for Work and Mental Health are always front of mind. Summer Camp is a lifestyle and the sense of freedom that campers feel at Birchwood is the underlying factor of what makes learning and growing at Camp seem so magical and effortless. The dynamic this creates is a once-in-a-lifetime every time, in every moment. At home, our youth are so busy and committed that much of their daily living is decided for them. Their day is structured either formally (with - for example - class schedules, sports practice, family dinner, etc) or informally ("now is the only time you have to go do your homework" or "you can shower in the morning, its time for bed").At Camp We've got structure and choices too, but theres a whole lot more independece that goes into the make up of your daughter's day. She gets to decide every day what activities she's going to do, if she wants to go on a wilderness trip. She gets to decide whether she'll have the main course at dinner, or an alternative option on the salad bar. She gets to decide whether to push her limits and attempt to learn a new activitiy award, or whether to try out for the camp play. The autonomy to challenge their own limits is its own discovery in the bigger picture of gaining introspective awareness in their Camp adventure. This sense of ownership and control over their experience is central to the sense of freedom our campers report and why what they learn at Camp transfers so well to "real life".
